The Center for Excellence in Distance Learning at Wiley College Partners with Instructure Canvas to Realize Its Vision for the HBCU of the 21st Century

MARSHALL, Texas and SALT LAKE CITY — September 18, 2014 — The Center for Excellence in Distance Learning (CEDL) at Wiley College today announced it has partnered with Instructure to use Canvas as its learning management system (LMS) establishing a preferred model for the HBCU of the 21st Century. After weighing a number of options, the CEDL choose Canvas to demonstrate a LMS that meets the evolving needs of diverse students served by HBCUs.

First-ever HBCU-created MOOC Offers Context for Understanding World Religions

MARSHALL, TEXAS and SALT LAKE CITY – September 16, 2014 – Although Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been shaking up higher education since 2012 by offering free courses to students anywhere in the world, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been notably absent from MOOC platforms, until now. Today Canvas Network and the Center for Excellence in Distance Learning (CEDL) at Wiley College announced a new MOOC developed by Dr. Keith Augustus Burton of CEDL member institution Oakwood University, “Understanding World Religions: An Occupational Approach.” Enrollment is free, and anyone can register at canvas.net.

Center for Excellence in Distance Learning Announces Member Enrollment Windows for 2014-2015 Academic Year

MARSHALL, Texas (April 30, 2014) – The Center for Excellence in Distance Learning at Wiley College, a membership organization that helps Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) develop online education courses and programs using open educational resources (OER), today announced member enrollment windows for the 2014-2015 academic year. These windows ensure new members have sufficient time for training, OER-based course design and faculty professional development to offer successful distance learning courses during the upcoming academic term.

The Center’s member enrollment windows for the 2014-2015 academic year are as follows:

Wiley College, Oakwood University, Florida Memorial University and Lumen Learning Collaborate to Help Online Education Thrive at HBCUs

MARSHALL, Texas (March 11, 2014) – At a time when many small colleges, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), struggle with a successful approach to online learning, The Center for Excellence in Distance Learning  at Wiley College is forging a new path. Tapping into the wealth of high quality open education resources (OER) available today, the Center is working with OER services provider Lumen Learning to tailor online courses to the unique needs of HBCUs and the students they serve.
